The post of Chairman/Chairwoman has been held by six people since the organisation was founded in 1946. The job is a highly unusual combination of the roles of a school headmaster and a senior intelligence agency bureaucrat. The current holder of the post, Terrence McAfferty, has held the position since 1993.
